I would be interested in one of the Kansas models. We
are working on a small intro exhibit in the museum here
in Atchison (just north of Kansas City) on the natural
history of this region and this would fit in with that.
If it is still available, I would be interested. Please
email back at your convenience.
Thanks.

Hi,
Yes, you may certainly have one of the Kansas models, I am
very pleased you have a use for one. I visited your webpage,
what a great building!
I plan to be in Kansas in late July and early August, would it
be OK if I dropped it off then? It's possible we could get it to
you earlier, but I would look forward to being there to bring it
myself, so I could also visit the museum.
Let me know!
Best,
Allan

Hello Allan,
I am very interested in your Kansas topographical model!
We are at the present time working on 2 different
grants with our school system and Kansas University
and the model would be a wonderful additional to our
educational materials for those programs.
If you will be traveling through Kansas in August, you
surely will be traveling highway 54 if you are going toward
the west coast. Actually, highway 54 is officially known
as the Yellow Brick Road as Gov. Sebellius signed a bill
declaring highway 54 The Yellow Brick Road and Liberal, Ks.
The Gateway to The Land of OZ! We have been the official
home of Dorothy as declared by Gov. Carlin in the 80's.
You must stop in Liberal and visit Dorothy's House and The
Land of OZ. We have Dorothy Tour Guides (complete with
ruby red slippers) and we have people from all over the
world visit us yearly (52 countries were represented last
year). We also have an annual OZ-fest the second weekend
of October where four of the original munchkins still return
every year to help us celebrate The Wizard of Oz. This year
Robert Baum, great-grandson of L. Frank Baum will also be
in attendance, presenting a living history of his great-
grandfather.
I will look forward to hearing from you soon!

The dates for my trip are not yet concrete, so I will contact

Hi,
That's good news - I hope I don't run out of the models!
My preference for proceeding would be that either the
people at the other sites email or call me to discuss
the delivery, or perhaps you could email me their (email?)
addresses and I'll write to them myself, which might be
easiest for all of you. Did you send the others the link
to the photos on my webpage? It's still online, at:

This can give them the opportunity to see the models
themselves, in the same way you saw them.
I'm really looking forward to this trip, thanks so much

I start to run out I'll ask the Grandarts gallery
if they will help me cast a few more! Still, the

I plan to be in Kansas City starting the 30th of July,
and will begin delivering the models as soon as I can
after that. Since you are fairly close to the city,
I would anticipate dropping yours off to you earlier
rather than later, sometime during the first week of

Dear Mr. McCollum,
We are in receipt of your letter and offer of the
topographical map of Kansas. We appreciate your
offer and would like to add your map to our collection.
We feel it is important for visitors to realize that
Kansas is not "flat".

I understand what you mean, it was so funny, when I first
contacted the terrain modeling company and asked them
about carving a "3-D elevation" model of Kansas, they
laughed! I have to say, though, even with the elevation
exaggerated, the model is still rather vertically challenged
- Kansas has a significant rise going west, but it is so
gradual that it can be easy to miss!
I'm very pleased that you can use the model, and I enjoy
your reason for accepting it. I'll call you when I arrive
in Kansas City, which should be around the 29th of this

Dear Phyllis Rippee,
My name is Allan McCollum, and I just got a note from
Mr. Clyde Rowen about contacting you. I've offered a
topographical model of the state of Missouri to the society,
and he said I could arrange to deliver it with you.
I plan to be in Missouri during the beginning of August,
and I will call you at that time to set up a time for
dropping off the model. If that is a bad time, please
let me know as soon as you can, so I can plan my trip.
I look forward to seeing the home of the society in

Mr. McCollum;
Thank you for your generous offer of donation of the
topographical model of the state of Missouri. We are
interested in possibly accepting your donation. The
state reserves the right to use donations in any manner
it deems appropriate. Would you expect any restrictions
on the use of the topographical model if we were to

Dear Mr. Ketchum,
I hadn't thought about restricting the use in any way,
you're the first person to ask me this - it hadn't
occurred to me. I guess I would prefer that the object
not be replicated and sold commercially, that comes to
mind as I think about it. But I doubt if that's likely
to happen. And I guess I should copyright the mold like
they do in the commercial world, but I hadn't thought
about it. I was just figuring you might have a use for
it in your educational displays.
Why do you ask? What do you have in mind?

Allan;
Those were just standard questions I ask. I like to make
sure that a prospective donor understands state policy.
We wouldn't duplicate the item, it would only be used in
a display. Copyright and expectations regarding the use
of a donated item can result in complications or misunderstandings.
It's my desire to make sure everything is understood
clearly and we both are comfortable with the situation
before I accept the item.

Dear Bruce,
Thanks for your answer - I understand, the questions
are important. No, I wouldn't expect there to be any
restrictions in the way you would use the object.
As far as copyrighting the mold goes, I should probably
consider doing that someday, but I wouldn't in any way
that would affect your rights to exhibit the object, paint
on it, or print photos of it, etc. I'm thinking of the model
as a "blank" in a way, something that could be painted or
marked in different ways, depending on how it was meant to
be used in a display. I'm hoping that you might have a
creative use for it!
I'm happy to sign a release that testifies to my flexibility
on this, should the state require it.
Best regards,
Allan

You are correct on the contact information. However, we
have 2 museum facilities and my office is located in the "new"
museum. The address for that is 212 West Walnut, which is
actually just around the block from the old Bushwhacker Jail
Museum. You will need to take the Camp Clark exit off of
71 highway and go west on highway 54 (this becomes Austin
when you reach the city limits) start counting stop lights
immediately. The 5th stop light is at the intersection of Austin
(54) and Ash, you will have just passed McDonalds on your left.
Turn right at Ash street and go 2 blocks north, on you right
will be a parking lot next to a red brick building with blue
awnings. This building houses the Library and the Bushwhacker
Museum. If you arrive before 10:00 a.m. you will need to use the
south entrance to the building located on Walnut street. The
museum is in the lower level. I look forward to meeting you.

Correct. No strings! Remember, it's plain white, and
while that's nice and pure in itself, I was figuring
you (or someone) might like to paint it in some
appropriate way. I think of it as a sort of "blank,"
ready for your own interpretation.

Dear Allan:
I thank you for your offer to donate a topograhical
model of Missouri to the Ripley County Historical
Society. The model appears innovative, unique and
educational and the Historical Society feels the
most appropriate setting for its display in our
county is the Ripley County public library in

I took your offer to the Library Board and they
agreed with enthusiasm to accept the donation.
The library recently inaugurated a new addition

I want to remind you that it is only painted white -
it might look good painted in some other way,

I'm thinking of the model as a sort of "blank" that

From: AllanMcNYC
To: bruce-s@mail.ukans.edu
Dear Bruce,
I'm so pleased to hear that the Museum might have
a use for the topo model.
The donation of the model is sort of an integral
part of a larger project. I was invited to do an
exhibition at Grandarts, and they offered to
finance the fabrication of an installation.
I decided to do a series of small cast topo models
of both Kansas and Missouri because I knew we'd
have to make a mold and that the mold could have a
dual use - to make artworks AND something museological.
Often we in the contemporary art world forget that
there's another world out there, and design projects
with too insular a purpose; I like to experiment
with an alternative way of making objects.
So I will be showing a series of ceramic topographical
models, with (hopefully) "beautiful" glazes - and,
at the same time, I will be donating quite a few
PLASTER versions to mostly smaller regional historical
society museums. I offered one to your museum, hoping
you might also have a use for it - I'm so glad to hear
that you do! I hope you like it - it's a little goofy,
since it's cut out in the shape of the state, along
"political" contours - not exactly a purely scientific,
geological statement!
While I show frequently in art museums around the
world, I like collaborating with museums of other types.
This is my first large venture into the world of regional
history museums (I have only done one other project that
involved collaborating with a regional history museum,
in Imperial Valley, California) - most of my other museum
collaborations have been with Natural History or science
museums of one sort or another.
If your interested to know more about what I've done
in the past, there is a website with lots of texts
and pictures at:
http://home.att.net/~allanmcnyc
I'm coming to Kansas City at the end of the month, and
I'll contact you when I'm able to deliver the model -
hopefully sometime in early August. The response to
my "donation" project has been much greater than I'd
ever imagined, and we're having to make a lot of extra
casts to satisfy the interest - I hope you don't mind
waiting!
Thanks,
Allan

that could be fitted on top and removed for different

Mr. McCollum:
Thank you for your generous offer. We would indeed
appreciate having one of your Kansas relief maps
for display in the Chisolm Trail Museum.
I've enclosed one of our museum brochures. Your
offer, all the way from New York City, comes to
us as quite a surprise. We look forward to a visit
from you and wonder how you learned about us and
selected our museum to receive one of your relief
maps.
I'm curious why you chose Kansas for your project,
and perhaps if you have done the same for any other
states. While Kansas is perhaps a fairly topographically
unexciting state, it is a state fairly rich in minerals
and agriculture.
As you must know, the state slopes gently south and
eastward from what may be referred to as the the high
plain where it borders Colorado.
I grew up in Crawford County in the southeast corner
of the state where coal deposits are near the surface
and strip mining was common in the early 1900s. That
part of the state is also included as part of the Ozarks.
If memory serves me correctly there are three major valleys
in the state, the Kaw, the Arkansas, and the Neosho.
I've read that millions of years ago this part of the
United States was covered by ocean. As the land to the
south rose, ocean water was trapped in a salt water sea
that covered much of Kansas. This explains the very
large and pure salt deposits in and around the cities
of Hutchison and Salina, put there as the land gradually
rose and the water trapped in pools evaporated.
This about exhausts my off the cuff knowledge of Kansas
geology. Perhaps I've got a little carried away.
Our museum sits near the route used by the cattle drives
of the 1870s. Geology and surface features of the land to
the south across Oklahoma played a fundamental role in
determining the rout chosen by the drovers. It might be
interesting to study the features of the land over which
the cattle moved northward from Texas to Kansas.
If you are able to come to our museum as your letter
suggests, and if possible, we would be pleased to know
when you might arrive. Our museum is run by volunteers.
We are all part time, and I would like to be there to
meet you.
Sincerely yours,
Richard M. Gilfillan, Pres

Allan:
I just read your letter and we would be happy to
accept your donation. The mail sometimes seems
to be slow so I thought this would be the quickest
way to respond considering your upcoming trip to
Missouri.
I'm sure we will be able to use it in some way in
our house-an 1899 Victorian which also houses our
museum.
I will be on vacation from August 7-17. If you
are here in that time frame, I can make arrangements
for someone to meet you. Please let me know.
How did you choose us? Charleston, a small rural
town is pretty far removed from NYC. I'm just curious
of the link.
Sincerely,
Tom Graham,
President of the Mississippi County Historical Society

Hello Tom,
I'm glad you have a use for the model - I'll do my
best to get it to you.
I'm an artist, and this idea was an experiment. I was
offered an exhibition in Kansas City, and I decided
that instead of making a few art objects to sell to
a few people, I would try to make a rubber mold from
which I could cast a large number of nice topographical
models that could be used in many different ways and
donate them to many small regional museums that might
not otherwise have the funds to make such models for
themselves.
I found your society in the "Directory of Historical
Organizations in the United States and Canada."
The part I expected to enjoy the most was to be the
driving around Missouri and Kansas to deliver them.
I was hoping to learn a lot about the two states in
the process.
I sent a quite a lot of letters out to a lot of
different small museums, assuming only a small
fraction would get a response - however, fortunately
or unfortunately, the demand for the models exceeded
my expectations tenfold, and I'm afraid I will be so
frenetic in trying to deliver them all that I won't
have time to enjoy the trip! I may have to rely on the
gallery I'm working with to do some of the deliveries;
and I may have to ask that some societies work out a
way to pick them up in Kansas City, if they can. I will,
however, do my best.
Your letter was the 107th that came back, if you can
believe that - I seriously miscalculated and sent out
too many offers. I was hoping I'd only have to make
around 50 models or thereabouts. I'll try to get them
to the museums in the order I received the letters,
and I'll do my best to get one to you when I'm out
there - I gather your phone number is still (573) 683-3837?
Thanks!
Allan
