Model of state on display

HOLTON, Kansas —

The Jackson County Historicial Society is proud to be one of the few museums in Kansas to receive a permanent gift of a three dimensional topographical model of the state of Kansas by artist Allan McCollum of New York City. It is cast from plaster and cement and is a wonderful educational tool for both children and adults. It shows the slope of Kansas from the mountains of Colorado along with the rivers and valleys of the region.

The original ceramic models or both Kansas and Missouri, finished with bright colored glazes, are on exhibit at Grand Arts, 1819 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, Mo., through Dec. 20.

The prototype patterns were computer- carved from satellite data by a company in California that uses satellite Geographical Information Systems data, and they are scientifically accurate to a fair degree. The heights of the geological features have been exaggerated slightly, to give a better picture of the elevations across the state. McCollum has designed the topographical model project to be looked at in two different ways, by deliberately giving it two different sets of significances—one in the world of contemporary arts, and one in the world of regional history museums.

The map is on display at the museum at Fourth and New York streets. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday year round, and is open from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday through the end of December.
