The Spiral Jetty was constructed by Robert Smithson in 1970. It was his largest and most ambitious piece of earth art. Shortly after completion, it was submerged by the rising waters of the Great Salt Lake. In 1973 Smithson died in an airplane crash in Texas while surveying a site for another piece of earth art. Only recently, with the decline in the level of the lake, has the Jetty resurfaced. It is 1,500 feet long, and is located at Rozel Point on the western side of Promontory Point. The photo was taken in October 1994. |
